Martin Stephenson (Daintees) and John Perry (Only Ones) certainly have a New Wave Connection, which goes way back to 1979...
Martin learned the solo to Another Girl Another Planet as a seventeen-year-old, which ended up getting him a gig with a band, so Mr Perry was already influencing the young Mr S.
In 2019, the two got chatting on Facebook and decided to do a pub gig together in London for a laugh. They got on so well that soon after Martin invited JP to join the Daintees as a special guest at a sold-out Chelsea Under the Bridge gig in London. John joined the band on stage for a rip-roaring version of ‘Another Girl…’ - played as a homage to The Only Ones from The Daintees. Of course, in Ireland, John’s solo from ‘Another Girl …” is generally familiar as the signature tune to Dave Fanning’s nightly show on 2FM from the late 70s to the mid 80s, and from its inclusion on countless punk compilation albums. Guitarist Johnny Marr often cite John Perry as an early influence on his playing.
Martin is well known for his shows in Ireland over the years and in the summer of 2022, JP & MS played together on a wee tour of Ireland, taking in Dublin, Dundalk & Thurles, and later in the year their album New Wave Connection was born.
They come to Ireland to play the Kilkenny Roots Festival on April 30th, Coughlans in Cork on May 1st, and Rathfarnham Castle in Dublin on May 4th.
