Hank Wedel + Greenshine + Clare Sands. Right Here Right Now Festival. The Green Room* * The Green Room is the intimate backstage space at Cork Opera House for shows that are up close and personal with a capacity of just 80 people. Hank Wedel Born in Dayton, Ohio, USA to an Irish mother and an American father, Hank lived in NYC with them, and two younger sisters, until 1974 when all moved to his mother’s hometown of Mallow, Co. Cork… another sister arrived there in 1979… He went to UCC from ’81-’85 to learn to be a high school teacher but was busking on the streets of Cork most of that time with like-minded hippie friends. All thru ’86-’88 he was involved with two bands in Cork and NYC…“Open Kitchen” and “Princes Street” … They resided in “The Lobby Bar”, played live, toured, recorded, put music out, appeared on radio and TV…and his life has been a cycle of this pattern ever since… Hank will be performing songs from his new record ‘Living in the Land of Love’ GreenShine GREENSHINE is a family band comprising Noel Shine, Mary Greene and their daughter Ellie, who specialize in close family harmonies and intricate multi-instrumental string-work. If there was one song that captured the imagination of the public this Summer it has to be The Girl in the Lavender Dress, the beautiful single which is taken from their recently released album of the same name. The song was penned by band member Mary Greene. Something about its sense of optimism and hopeful message, Ellie Shine’s clear, young voice and supporting harmonies, strings and instrumentation cut through the sometimes very dark news of the Summer. It was retained on the RTE Radio 1 playlist for three months where it received the most plays of any track for the month of August and was judged No. 1 Pick of the Pack by Jukebox Connect as well as reaching No. 1 in the iTunes Ireland Singer Songwriter Chart. Its optimism was such a tonic that it was shared all over the world via the internet and copies of the album have so far reached three continents of the globe and counting. RTE Presenter and Producer Aonghus McAnally described it as: “One of the most creative things to come out of Ireland for quite a while.” while broadcasting legend Alf McCarthy opined that it was “The sound of the Summer.” On the night you’ll hear a set list that covers their own beautiful songs and folk classics from both sides of the Atlantic as well as the odd rock or pop surprise done in their own distinctive style. Greenshine’s beautiful new album The Girl in the Lavender Dress is available in Golden Discs. Clare Sands With a fiddle in one hand and a guitar in the other, Cork based Clare Sands is a singer-songwriter, musician, composer, and music teacher. She performs in a variety of genres, her own material being a mixture of Blues & Folk. With deep roots in Northern Ireland and County Wexford, Clare started playing the fiddle at the age of four, learning tunes off her father Seamus on a weekly basis. As well as playing Traditional Irish Music from an early age with different family members, Clare also trained classically on the violin. Her mother Susan bought her a guitar in her early teens, and gave her a strong love of the Blues, playing legends like Muddy Waters and Eva Cassidy on the way to school. She soon found a love for song writing, and used whatever instruments that lay around the house like the guitar, the piano, the bodhrán or the mandolin to accompany herself. Following the release of her critically acclaimed debut single ‘Change is a Comin’ in 2014, Clare has played prestigious venues across Ireland, Holland, Germany, and New York City over the last two years while finishing her degree in Music & Italian at UCC. This year Sands released her lead single ‘Satisfy Me’ which captures Clare’s passionate vocals atop a wonderful brass section, marking her out as a really exciting act to follow. Clare’s highly anticipated debut album, ‘Join Me at The Table’, which is an eclectic mix of Blues, Folk, Jazz, and Irish Traditional music was launched in Coughlans on October 13th last year. Last autumn, Clare also joined Luka Bloom on his Irish tour. “Clare writes with a really true sense of freedom in her lyrics, just as young Dylan did. As for her vocals, they grace her words with all the care of an experienced musical surgeon at work” — The Last Mixed Tape “Sands has forged a fantastically feisty fusion of folk, jazz and trad that simultaneously soothes and excites as it unfolds. Its innovative sound and smooth execution are guaranteed to grab the attention of a vast and varied listenership’ ”— Pure M Magazine “The songs, the voice, the guitar playing, all happening at a very high level. Clare wears her rebel heart on her sleeve as well as her tongue. The future is very bright. She’s a star to me already”
