Trombonist Paul Dunlea and renowned New York based guitarist/arranger, David O'Rourke perform selections from their recently released album 'FRATERNAL' joined by Davie Ryan on Drums, Cormac Mccarthy on Piano and Eoin Walsh on Bass.
Although at home in a variety of musical styles, Cork trombonist/composer/arranger Paul Dunlea concentrates primarily on Jazz and Improvisation. This has furthered his reputation as one of Irelands most in demand trombonists.
Dunlea has performed/toured/recorded with the likes of Mick Flannery, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Bryce Dressner (The National), Lewis Nash, Peter Washington,Billy Drummond, Greg Gisbert,Tim Ries, David O' Rourke's O' Rourkestra, Marshall Gilkes, Ryan Keberle, The Crash Ensemble, The Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, Hot House Big Band,Cormac McCarthy’s Cottage Evolution, Niall McCabe Band & The Hard Ground.
Dunlea is a graduate of the CIT Cork School of music holding both a bathelors degree in trombone performance and a masters degree in composition. He has held the chair of principle trombone with the Band 1 Brigade - Irish Defence Forces since 2001.
In 2011, Dunlea released his debut album ‘Bi-polAr’ to critical acclaim - reaching #1 in the iTunes chart. 2016 will see the release of his second album recorded at the renowned Bunker Studios, Brooklyn, NY featuring bassist Peter Washington, drummer Billy Drummond, guitarist David O’ Rourke (co-leader) & Cork’s Cormac McCarthy.
In 2013 Dunlea established his own big band as a creative outlet for his own compositions. To date, the band has performed sell out shows across the country in venues such as The Opera House, Cork, The Grand Opera House, Belfast & The Everyman Theatre - Cork along with headlining the 2015 Cork & Limerick Jazz Festivals. Entire concerts have also been broadcast nationally on both RTE and BBC radio
Recently Dunlea performed alongside some of the biggest names in the New York Jazz scene commemorating the music of Frank Sinatra. The band, led by Irish born guitarist David O’ Rourke, played 8 sell out shows at the famous Jazz Standard Club.
For the last nine years, New York City based jazz guitarist, conductor, and arranger David O’Rourke has guided tomorrow’s jazz musicians as ‘house bandleader’ of the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra. And for his contributions to Jazz Standard Discovery (a music education program that he has led since 1998), David and co-founder James Polsky were named “New Yorkers Of The Week” by NY1 News. Born and raised in Dublin, O’Rourke has built a career defined and shaped by his exposure to and association with many of his musical idols, both in the US and abroad. He has played with Les Paul and Bucky Pizzarelli and studied with legends such as Barry Galbraith and Pat Martino. He currently leads and writes for his own 20-piece band (The O’Rourkestra) at the Zinc Bar NYC, composing and arranging including recent commissions for the City Of Dublin Jazz Orchestra while continuing to perform in the New York/New Jersey/Philadelphia jazz clubs.
